The Northwest Ohio Division III District Wrestling Tournament will be on Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24 at Owens Community College in the SHAC. The 224 wrestlers from 46 schools qualified last week by placing in the top four in sectionals held at Archbold, Carey, Elmwood, and Plymouth.
Session 1 begins at 4:00pm on Friday with First Round Matches, followed by Quarterfinals and First Round Consolations on five mats. Saturday’s Session 2 begins at 10:00am with Round 2 Consolations, followed by Semi-Finals and Consolation Quarterfinals (run simultaneously), and Consolation Semi-Finals on four mats. Finals commence at 5:00pm with 1st, 3rd, and 5th place matches. The first 4 place finishers qualify for next weekend’s state championships in Columbus.
Highlighted wrestlers include two State Champions: Pat Harrington-119 (Sandusky St. Mary C.C., 55-0), 1st place at 103 in 2006, and Nick Purdue-189 (Genoa, 36-3), 1st at 171 in 2006 and also 3rd at 160 in 2005. Eleven other state placers include Troy Opfer-112 (Sandusky St. Mary C.C., 56-0), 2nd at 112 in 2006 and 3rd place at 103 in 2005, Lee Schumaker-130 (Arcadia, 36-1), 5th at 125 in 2006 and 6th at 112 in 2005, Dusty Hermes-140 (Sandusky St. Mary C.C., 54-3), 4th at 125 in 2005, Alex Hughes-189 (Seneca East, 39-1), 3rd at 171 in 2006, Brian Hunt-215 (Tiffin Calvert, 34-2) 4th at 215 in 2006, Brock Kirian-189 (Mohawk, 6-1), 4th at 189 in 2006, Christian Ortolani-145 (Sandusky St. Mary C.C., 52-6) 7th place at 145 in 2006, Hunter Reed-171 (Crestview, 44-1), 2nd at 171 in 2006, Eric Reer-152 (Western Reserve, 25-0) 3rd at 140 in 2005, Kurt Wolff-171 (Genoa, 36-6), 2nd at 160 in 2006, and Derrick Yant-160 (Delta, 38-2), 8th at 145 in 2006.
Returning district champions include two-time champion Troy Opfer-112, 1st at 112 in 2006 and 1st in 2005 at 103, Pat Harrington-119, 1st at 103 in 2006, Nick Purdue-189, 1st in 2006 at 171 and 3rd in 2005 at 160, Derrick Hill, McComb-145, 1st in 2006 at 135, Lee Schumaker-130, 1st in 2006 at 125 and 2nd in 2005 at 112, and Eric Reer-152, 1st in 2005 at 140 and 4th in 2006 at 152.
Brock Sowers, 160-Mohawk, is a three time placer: 3rd in 1006 at 160, 5th in 2005 at 140, and 6th in 2004 at 125. Two-time placers include: 130#Austin Bernath-Archbold, 5th in 2006 at 112 and 4th in 2005 at 103, 140#Jake Grigson-Northwood, 2nd in 2006 at 130 and 5th in 2005 at 125, 152#Mason True-Arcadia, 2nd in 2006 at135 and 2nd in 2005 at 135, and 171#Jordan Cartwright-Mohawk, 3rd in 2006 at 152 and 5th in 2005 at 145.
