Ohio Wrestling North vs. South

OK this one is my opinion only.
It’s called Ohio’s own saga North vs. South.
What makes the schools in the northern part of the state more dominant as a whole than the wrestling schools down south.
Yes there are some anomalies like St. Paris Graham and this year Troy Christian in Division III. Those are a couple of very good wrestling schools in the south.
But as a whole once you cross a geographical line in Ohio it’s a whole different world. I don’t know quite where that line is, Columbus maybe?
And before you say Baker you don’t know what you’re talking about. Back when I competed, I wrestled all over the state of Ohio and as a coach I took teams from our home in the heart of NW Ohio all over the state to compete throughout the years. Plus I got to know a lot about the southern Ohio area after wrestling at Wright State for four years.
At small schools in the south numbers seem to be lower and the depth just isn’t there. Don’t get me wrong there are and always have been some quality wrestlers in southern Ohio but just not nearly as many of them as there are in other parts of the state.
I attended the Tipp City Tippecanoe Invite yesterday and that all but confirmed my thoughts on this subject.
So why does the south continue to lag behind the north? I think part of it is commitment to the program from the schools and administrators. While boys basketball has and always will be king all across the Buckeye state during the winter months, I think schools in the north take their wrestling programs a little more seriously than they do in the south. Maybe it’s tradition part of it is coaching. I saw some things being said an taught by coaches that left me scratching my head. Maybe part of it is coaches…quality coaches and again this doesn’t include everyone in the south because I know some very good coaches down there.
I just don’t think as many schools in the southern part of the state take wrestling as seriously as their northern counterparts.
I’d love to hear your opinion on the subject.
