Merry Christmas edition

Watched a little wrestling today at the BG Duals. Great even if anyone gets the chance take it in tomorrow at BGSU. In the meantime I have to finish my wrestling coverage critique…
I won’t be back blogging probably until Christmas…if I do get some results over the weekend I will post them.

Coverage Critique Part II
Mansfield News Journal -- B. Great wrestling writer in Jon Spencer. Results in the paper are a little sparse on a daily basis. Spencer is also the beat writer for the OSU coverage for Gannett’s Ohio newspapers so there won’t be much until they win the national championship.
Marion Star -- C-. A few features and that’s about it. Some results but really if you are looking for coverage look elsewhere.
Napoleon Northwest Signal -- D. Not much to say here. I’ve picked it up a few times in Deshler and haven’t been impressed. Plus their website sucks.
Norwalk Reflector -- C-plus. Pretty decent job covering the Norwalk schools, Edison and Monroeville. Better than most.
Port Clinton News Herald -- B-. Hey the writing from the stringers isn’t all that great but at least they get out and cover some of the bigger area duals great effort.
Sandusky Register -- A. You people in Sandusky might complain but let me tell you the job the Register does covering wrestling far surpasses the majority of newspapers. Way to go Dan.
Shelby Daily Globe -- A-. I can always find out what the Shelby and Plymouth teams are doing by checking out the Globe. I just wish they would add the summaries to their online content.
St. Marys Evening Leader
Tiffin Advertiser Tribune -- C-. They’ll staff girls basketball a couple of times a week but so far only have sent a writer to the Calvert-Columbian-Mohawk match. we’ll see how they do later in the season.
Toledo Blade -- D. One of America’s Great Newspapers huh? Right. The Blade flat out stinks.
Van Wert Times Bulletin -- D-plus. Not much information even though Van Wert is a pretty good program they barely get a passing grade.
Wapakoneta Daily News -- C. I think they only grapplers they cover are Wapakoneta. It’s OK.

Rating wrestling media

I have to click on these links to get these wrestling stories and man I have to tell you there is some bad sports writing going on as far as wrestling is concerned around Northwest Ohio.

There are a lot of sports writers that don’t know a half nelson from half of a jelly doughnut.

I read one story where they referred to the wrestlers as “players” and referred to wrestling as “playing” The Most Valuable Wrestler award was even mentioned as the Most Valuable Player award. Uggghh.

But give them credit I guess at least they are writing about the sport. I have to admit when I have to write up the University of Findlay Equestrian results I have know idea what the advanced walk/trot/canter is.

So today’s blog isn’t so much about wrestling but about wrestling coverage. There are 25 daily newspapers in the Northwest District and we’ll grade them on wrestling coverage. Today’s grades are for the first 13 newspapers in alphabetical order. I’d like some feedback and you tell me what grade you give the media outlets in your area.

Ashland Times Gazette -- B-plus. Pretty good coverage on the local teams like Ashland and Crestview and the team at Ashland University. I wish they would put their dual meet summaries online.

Bellevue Gazette -- B-plus. Sports Writer Ed Fox knows wrestling and the give pretty good coverage to the Bellevue Redmen.

Bryan Times -- A-minus. They even get the Bryan JV Tournament in. Large coverage area for a small paper and a very good wrestling writer in John Fryman.

Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum -- D-plus. An award-winning sports staff at Bucyrus but little focus given to wrestling. I always read about the Seneca East and Mohawk boys and girls basketball teams…but never a word about their wrestling programs which are more competitive than their basketball teams.

Celina Daily Standard -- B-minus. Celina and Mercer County is basketball country although the Standard seems to do a good job.

Defiance Crescent News -- A-plus. They have the space other papers don’t seem to have and one of the more knowledgeable writers in Chuck Martinez. Simply put they get the job done.

Delphos Herald -- C. They give it the old college try and will always include the information sent into them. Although I don’t care for their style. It’s a personal choice.

Findlay Courier -- No rating. Hey I can’t possibly be objective on our own coverage. Could I do more…hell yeah. This is what this blog is all about.

Fostoria Review Times -- C. Great for girls basketball, wrestling probably a little below average overall.

Fremont News Messenger -- B. They cover the duals with stringers and do a pretty good job with that. Although I’d love to see their agate packages online for basketball boxes and wrestling dual meet summaries.

Galion Inquirer -- B-minus. I haven’t seen the print version of the newspaper in a few months but they seem to be getting some info online about the Galion Tigers. The wrestling team is about the only things to write about because the basketball stinks

Kenton Times -- C. Average. Kenton and Riverdale are their only prep wrestling teams and they do a decent job overall.

Lima News -- D. Not much info on the weekends and so far the dual meet summaries they have run haven’t even told you which school the kid was from that won. Not even any capsules previewing area teams unless I missed it. Plus their online writing leaves a lot to be desired.

Change for the good

Call this blog change for the good.
When the OHSAA implemented the rule a few seasons ago mandating every school wrestle at least 4 dual meets in its 20 point schedulesome coaches grumbled and complained.
The best way to prep your team for the rigors of the OHSAA state tournament series was to wrestle in tournaments during the regular season and as many tournaments as possible.
The dual meet was obsolete, a relic of the past. The 4-dual rule coupled with making triangulars equal to 1-point on the 20-point schedule has breathed new life into the dual meet. Most schools still choose to schedule between 4 and 6 duals a year and wrestle in tournaments for the rest of their schedules.
But what the rule has created has been great for wrestling in my opinion. It’s helped spur exciting and intriguing dual and triangular match ups.
I like to call ‘em neighborhood skirmishes.
Two of them are on tap for tonight.
Tiffin Calvert and Tiffin Columbian will meet for the first time in a triangular meet at another neighboring school in Mohawk. Also Sandusky takes on Perkins for public school bragging rights in Sandusky.
There are other rival matches that have been created by the rule too.
Fostoria and St. Wendelin now wrestle one another as do Delphos Jefferson and Delphos St. John’s. Another of my favorites is the annual triangular featuring Norwalk, Norwalk St. Paul and Edison.
These aren’t just duals…community pride is on the line too. And the excitement and attention these matches generate is exactly what our sport needs.

How about those University of Findlay Roughnecks? Despite having six new starters they knocked off Ohio University Friday night 18-15.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go to the match because I had to work Friday night. But from all indications it was an exciting match. Findlay got a pair of 1-point victories from to ensure the victory.
From what I was told by people who were there, Findlay just simply outhustled their Division I opponent and that helped get them the win.
OK last week I claimed the Roughnecks didn’t get any respect from their fellow coaches. Here’s why. Findlay, the No.19 team in the latest coaches’ poll, beats Ohio University 18-15 Friday night. On Sunday, Ohio whips No.9 Indianapolis 31-10 at Purdue.
