Big tourneys on tap

Lots of big meets on tap for this weekend.
The Lima Central Catholic Invitational 31 teams strong gets underway Friday night. The meet brings together some of the best small-school wrestlers from the Southwest and Northwest Districts together.
I’m hoping to get down there Saturday morning to see some of the action.
Things I will be watching at LCC is how Ayersville’s wrestlers do. The Pilots have had a terrific season thus far, but honestly, they haven’t had to step up to very much competition. They will be tested for the first time here and I have had a hard time figuring out where to rank their wrestlers but this should give me a pretty good indication of how they rank among the other teams in the NW District.

Another of my favorite events, the Sandusky St. Mary’s Division III Duals is also set to start Friday. As a coach we took our team to this tournament in its infancy and there’s nothing more grueling than wrestling 10 duals in 2 days in the middle of your season.
Sandusky St. Mary’s Archbold, Ashland Crestview, Delta, Seneca East, Montpelier, Genoa, Western Reserve. It’s going to be a grind and there will be some excellent matches. If I could only clone myself and be a couple of places at once I would go to both LCC and SMCC this weekend.
Of course you also have the Joe Szymczak Duals at Elmwood this weekend. I remember the tournament when it first started and its grown into a pretty nice little dual meet tourney. Solid field, it should be interesting. The only beef I have with it is if the tournament is named after you you shouldn’t be covering it for the BG Sentinel. Just joking Joe!

Post Tourney Reflections

OK now that I have a little time to breathe.
First off I’ll try and do some rankings next week. That way I can study the LCC Invitational and St. Mary’s Duals results before I put it out there for everyone to see. It will be a complete ranking of the Division III in the NW District. Then, the day or two after league championships are decided, I will put the 2007 Bakeman Report out for every one to see and study. That will be a comprehensive look at the Owens Community College district.
A couple of things that surprised me from the Van Buren Invitational last weekend.
Hey I didn’t think Allen East’s Dylan Ford would beat Derrick Hill in the final at 145. No way. But Ford wrestled an extremely smart match and Hill wasn’t on his game like he was earlier in the tournament.
Again, sometimes a loss at this point of the season is the best thing for a wrestler because it allows him to regain his focus and work on those things he needs to brush up on before the rigors of the OHSAA tournament series get underway.
Watching Calvert’s Kyle Kwiat wrestle Arcadia’s Mason True was like watching twins wrestle. Both are great mat wrestlers and Kwiat is probably the best kept secret in the NW District since he missed the last half of last season with an injury.
It will be interesting to see another Hill vs. Ford and Kwiat vs. True match up again this weekend at the LCC Invitational.
