Three Delta wrestlers on the mat in the semis right now.

215 -- Woodmore's Ryan Buckner blanks Archbold's Kraig Bostelman 7-0. Advances to wrestle Hunt.

285 -- Looks like an all SLL heavyweight final as Otsego's Jacob Southwick is going to beat Brennan Gregory of New London 6-2

We're live and Owens-wide

Bloggin’ on site today at the Owens Community College Division III district thanks to a Wi-Fi connection courtesy of the Owens Math and Science hookup.
Looks like a fight to the finish today for the title. Delta leads Sandusky St. Mary’s 54½-49½ heading into today’s semifinal round. Elmwood and Mohawk are next at 39 ½ and 38 ½ points respectively but with all due respect to my friends that are Royals and Warriors, they won’t be a factor in the team race.
Since I have a connection here and some time, I will try and provide some updates
Here’s a quick note book in the action yesterday and today…

OUTTA HERE: Tinora’s Jacob Varner, a returning state qualifier went two and out last night at 112 pounds. He dropped 12-4 decision to Monroeville’s Lance Johnson in the first round and was eliminated by Mohawk’s Steve Curlis 4-2 in OT. Curlis came into the sectional tournament with a 10-14 record.

MEGA MATCHUP: One of the biggest matchups in the semifinals will be at 112 pounds. Sandusky St. Mary’s two-time state placer Troy Opfer takes a 58-0 record into his match with 41-0 Patrick Henry Alex Lopez. Should be a fun one to watch, both can make the podium next weekend at the Schottenstein Center.

MONKEY OFF HIS BACK: After a couple of close losses to Arcadia returning state qualifier Mason True, Elmwood junior Mitchell Lee got the monkey off his back by beating True 10-3 in Friday night’s quarterfinal round. True, a returning district runner-up will have a tough road to get back to Columbus as he will likely face either Western Reserve’s Eric Reer or Tiffin Calvert’s Kyle Kwiat in the consolation semifinals.

CONFERENCE CALL: Three conference each have three teams among the top 10 teams after the first day of district action. The Northwest Ohio Athletic League has Delta (1st), Liberty Center (6th) and Archbold (8th) in the top 10. The Suburban Lakes League’s Elmwood (3rd), Otsego (5th) and Genoa (8th) are in the top 10. The Midland Athletic League’s Mohawk (4th), Tiffin Calvert (7th) and Seneca East (10th) are also among the team leaders.

Go Roughnecks!

I pretty much wrote all I could heading into today’s high school district wrestling tournaments.
But I couldn’t let the day slip by without mentioning the University of Findlay wrestlers will be in action this weekend at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.
Yep, there’s no denying that those Roughnecks have had a tough season. There have been a lot of injuries and many young wrestlers were thrown into the lineup. And not to mention freshman Sean Dong becoming ineligible…man that really hurt. I think he was a shoe-in to qualify for nationals and was a serious candidate to earn All-American honors for the Roughnecks.
I remember what it was like. There was a stretch in the middle of my freshman year at Wright State that I wondered if I was ever going to win another wrestling match the rest of my life. It can get that tough when you are a young, struggling college wrestler that isn’t used to losing on the mat.
But I have plenty of faith in Nelson’s boys. I’d expect Andy Uhl and Tony Guerra to win regional titles and heavyweight Travis Clark, a McComb boy, to qualify. Someone else will step up and surprise and qualify too…they always have at least one surprising finish at regionals. With four guys qualified maybe the Roughnecks can end up in the top 10 at nationals for I think the fifth straight year.

Unfortunately for may coaches, parents and wrestlers whether or not this can be a considered a successful season all boils down to what happens this weekend.

Must See Matches

Is it me or is there projected to be bigger semifinal matches this season than ever before.
I think the best two kids in the district in a lot of cases could be paired up in the semifinals at least that seems to me to be the case at the Division III district tournament at Owens Community College.
St. Mary’s Troy Opfer and Patrick Henry’s Alex Lopez at 112, Tiffin Calvert’s Kyle Kwiat and Western Reserve’s Eric Reer are two examples at Owens. Looking at the Kettering Fairmont Division III bracket, Bluffton’s Josh Falk will be paired with Troy Christian’s Zach Toal (who gave Falk his only loss of the season) in the semis at 140 if both win their first two matches Friday.
Anyone have any other examples of possible semifinal matches that should be finals?
I also have to chime in that the 135 pound weight class at Owens is weak. Only 3 wrestlers in the entire weight class have less than nine losses. That is truly amazing.

Here are my list of five must-see matches from Friday night at the Owens District.

112 -- Ryan Rayfield (Delta) Jr. 24-11 vs. Steven Butcher (Western Reserve) Soph. 6-2
Rayfield was third at Owens last year at 103 pounds while Butcher was sixth at the same weight. Having a pair of district placers meet in the first round is relatively rare. And Butcher has just come back in the past couple of weeks as he was recovering from a broken leg.

119 -- Payton Oney (South Central) Fr. 45-1 vs. Jordan Karnes (Edgerton) Jr. 40-0
OK this is a second round matchup so sue me. Both wrestlers shouldn’t have much trouble in the first round. Oney has been sensational suffering his first loss of the season last weekend to returning state champ Harrington in the Plymouth final. Karnes, a returning state qualifier, may have the edge because he’s been here before.

125 -- Warren Fleetwood (Margaretta) Sr. 23-7 vs. Dustin Carnahan (Paulding) Jr. 37-11
One of those No.1 vs. No.4 matchups to watch in the first round. Fleetwood won the Plymouth Sectional last week and was the Sandusky Bay Conference runner-up the previous week which is never an easy task. Carnahan, a returning state qualifier, fell victim to a very tough 125 pound field at Archbold last week.

152 -- Mitchell Lee (Elmwood) Jr. 35-8 vs. Mason True (Arcadia) Jr. 31-5
Another possible second round match up if both get through their first round matches. Lee has Ayersville’s Jarred Hageman (24-7) and True has Sandusky St. Mary’s Max Dahs (35-17). They have met two or three times this season with True winning all of them in close fashion but it’s been a real battle each time they’ve square off. If they match up keep your eyes on that mat.

160 -- Derrick Yant (Delta) Jr. 38-2 vs. Shane Lehman (Arcadia) Jr. 29-12
Again two more district placers wrestling in the first round. Yant, a returning state placer, is the obvious favorite after having to drop into the consolation bracket last week at the Archbold Sectional for an illegal slam. Lehman was a state alternate last season and I think will be a tough customer in the consolation bracket. Whoever wins this match will likely have another toughie in the quarterfinals where Sandusky St. Mary’s Ryan Wasylik will likely await them.

Anyone have any matches they are looking forward to watching…it’s time to share!

A couple of nuggets

A couple of little nuggets for today.
First I am working on a statewide entry grid. I have it completed except for a handful of sectionals. If you want to check it out click on this link.

I am missing the following sectionals:
Division I
At Hoover
Division II
At Hoover
Division III
At Plymouth
At Brooklyn
At Northwestern
At Rootstown
If anyone has a bracket sheet and can help me fill in the blanks I would appreciate it.

Second here are the rankings to determine who the state duals representative will be from the Owens District next year. The qualifiers should be set at the conclusion of the tournament and I will post the results here.

Here are the other criteria that will be used to determine the state duals participants:

B. Four bonus points for each underclass member of their team that wins one or more matches at the District Tournament.

C. Teams receive all team points earned by underclassmen competing in the District Tournament.

D. In the event an alternate has the opportunity to compete in the District, he will be scored the same as any other qualifier. If an alternate does not have the opportunity to compete, they will not count in accumulating team points.

E. The top two teams will be invited to compete in the Ohio Duals. In the event a team declines, the invitations will be offered in order of team finish based on the above formula.

F. In the event of a tie, the team with the most district qualifiers is invited.

G. In the event of a tie, the team with the most District champions (then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.) is invited.

Down to 64

Well there were some surprises and some disappointments sectional weekend.
There are always some of both.
And there’s bound to be some more of both again this weekend at districts. I honestly haven’t had a chance to digest the district pairings yet we were too busy at work with basketball yesterday to delve into it too deeply. But we’ll talk about the pairings this week.
We’re down to 64 wrestlers in each weight class and only 42 will be left standing in two weeks.
It’s going to be a fun ride.

All District Pairings are available on Baum’s Page…see the link to the right.
Below is how the wrestlers listed in my Bakeman Report fared last weekend.
